Youll See Come A Little Bit Closer Were Not So Different At All
Something I've wanted to do a blog post about for a while, and have put off for FAR too long is How Stripping Prepared Me For Broadcasting On Twitch. Yep, that would've been the title of today's blog if I didn't have a weird thing for using song lyrics as My post titles...
I'm sure there are gonna be some folks reading this giant smear of words who have no idea what Twitch is, so let Momma Paige enlighten you.
Once upon a time, there was a site called Justin.tv and it was glorious. It was split up into a bunch of categories like Gaming, Pet Cams, Social, DIY, TV shows & Movies, etc. Anyone could sign up and start a channel. You could play video games, or stream a TV show (*cough* that was fun to have around but I am honestly unsure if it was legal), or give advice, or paint, or whatever your heart desired, and people could watch and utilize the chat room that came with your channel. It was a grand old time and I miss those glory days. Well, the gaming section got SO popular, that they decided to split it away from JTV and thus Twitch.tv was born! All gaming! All the time! After a while, the folks in corproate decided to nuke Justin.tv from orbit (which I'm still sour about but that's words and paragraphs for another day and another place). Nowadays, Twitch offers channels that entertain folks with things besides just gaming. Arts & crafts, music, cooking, etc. But you get the basic idea? You can watch a live show (or rerun) and chat with fellow fans, friends, and other broadcasters. People mostly do it for the love of doing it, but there is money to be made. It's not easy to have Twitch as your only job, but it can be done.
I have My own Twitch channel. Mostly gaming, but I've done some art, some social chatting, and even read some books aloud. Right meow My laptop is terminally ill, so I've not been able to broadcast. I actually started back in the JTV days, I've been around since 2009.
So...
How exactly DID stripping prepare Me for broadcasting on Twitch?
I think the easiest way to do this is to break it down by topics, and see how they're similar. Keep in mind that, as I said above, most folks on Twitch do it for the love of doing it. The same really can't be said for the majority of strippers.
Stripping: You get on stage, in hopes of making some tips by being entertaining.
Twitch: You go live, in hopes of making some tips by being entertaining.
Stripping: Some days you can swim in the profits, the Gods of generosity smiled upon you. Other days, you couldn't get a dollar out of a guy if you offered your first born to Satan.

Stripping: You have the DJ play songs you love, because you're more entertaining and give your all when you enjoy the music.
Twitch: You play a game you love, because you're more entertaining and give your all when you enjoy the game.*
Stripping: Sometimes you get asstacos who think they're funny by being rude fucksticks, and then... to add insult to more insult, they don't contribute a damned dime. But you keep your head up and keep entertaining everyone else. Cause that's what entertainers do.

Stripping: You can make your own hours. Some people show up as little as possible, then complain if they can't pay rent. Some people get an A+ for responsibility and show up a lot, and rent gets paid with ease. Some people don't know when to stop, overdo it, and burn out. That can be a messy sight to behold. Clean up in isle 3!

Stripping: You really want all the fancy new shoes and the fancy new outfits and the fancy new makeup. Do you REALLY need it? Can you REALLY afford it? Sure, it'll make your shows more sparkly... but pace yourself with the upgrades.

Stripping: If you love what you do, you network, and often times meet some amazing people in your field of work, who become great friends or sometimes even like family to you.

Stripping: You meet all kinds of people in this line of work. The folks who come to see you perform are quite the variety. Some suck, but others are awesome. You can meet some wild characters, folks who can offer you amazing advice when you need it, and solid friends.

Stripping: Drama! There will be drama amongst your peers. It's a competitive business. Also not everyone in this line of work makes Good Life Choices™. There will be drama with those you entertain. They will cause drama for you. They will cause drama for each other. They will cause drama for themselves. Because not everyone who enjoys watching you makes Good Life Choices™.

Stripping: You don't have to be perfect. You just have to be happy, healthy, and hopefully you'll get rent paid along the way.

Stripping: For the love of ALL of the Gods, don't get sucked into the drama of others. It's like riding the shittiest, ricketiest, most dangerous and unentertaining roller coaster you could find.

Stripping: If you REALLY, REALLY want to bank from this job. Make it your glorious career, and it DOESN'T work out. Move on. Don't let it ruin your soul. Just because it wasn't the career to end all careers for you doesn't mean you suck at life. You are still awesome and you will find another job and continue to be awesome, just more gainfully employed.

Stripping: You will hear some of the greatest jokes, worst pick up lines, and witness the most hysterical moments of your life.

Stripping: You will have some great moments. You will have some frustrating moments. You will make friends, enemies, and pseudo-family. You will have stories to tell for the rest of your life. You might regret doing it, or you might wear it, proudly, like a badge. Either way, it was an interesting chapter in your life.

And there you have it, folks. The blog post I've been promising for well over a year. You're welcome.
* - I used gaming as the example here, even though there are other categories on Twitch, I just happen to game 99% of the time.
